Looking Back on February 2025

February started off as a cold month. Despite the cold weather, the Over The Hill Gang (OTHG), had an average attendance of 41 individuals and over 170 meals were served during the month. The gang welcomed seven visitors. We also celebrated OTHG member, Wayne Smith’s 90thj. birthday with a special birthday cake provided by his son.

On February 13th. the Liberty Hill School Superintendent, Mr. Steve Snell and staff provided a 1.5 hour bus tour. OTHG members toured three of the schools with in the school district. Members returned back with great comments and reviews. Many thanks to Mr. Snell and his assistant, Rachel for making the tour possible. Approximately 15 OTHG members attended the tour.

Many thanks to Mr. Gary Spivey for his outstanding history presentation on February 20th. regarding the history and current status of the Liberty Hill History Museum. Mr. Spivey provides a history presentation regarding the local area every third Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the OTHG Senior Center.

We mourn the loss of our beloved OTHG member, Gwen Burkhardt who passed on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. She was an outstanding individual and always willing to help with the weekly kitchen duties. Her celebration of life is scheduled at the Andice Baptist Church from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, March 15, 2025.

Our coffee social continues to meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 am. The Yak and Yarn group meet every other Tuesday at 11:00 am. Each Wednesday, the Canasta Card group continues to meet at 10:00 am. as well as the Ladies Bible Study at 11:00 am. In addition, our regular Thursday OTHG Luncheon at 11:30am. followed by domino’s, bingo and various card games.

Looking Back on January 2025

The new year started off by welcoming Mr. & Mrs. Claus (Ella & Tom), back to the gang. Tom and Ella took a brief leave of absents as they devoted time listening to several hundred children tell what they wanted for Christmas at Lakeline Mall. We also missed Ella’s cobbler.

Over 160 meals were served during the month of January with an average attendance of 40 individuals each week. This was a good response even with the January 9th. lunch cancelation due to the bad weather conditions.

Unfortunately, we mourn the loss of member, Wilson Middleton who passed away on the 16th. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and love ones.

Our thanks goes out to Gary Spivey for his presentation regarding the connection between the old communities of Hope Well and Gabriel Mills. In addition, many thanks to Elder Marteno and Elder Newman for the great support regarding the lunch cleanup provided each week.

The Canasta Card group and the Women’s Bible Study continue to meet every Wednesday as well as the Yak & Yarn group every other Tuesday. February events are as listed below: February 4th. and 18th. – Yak & Yarn at 11:00 a.m. February 4, 11, 18 and 25th. – Morning Social at 8:00 a.m. February 5, 12, 19 and 26th. – Women’s Bible Study at 11:00 a.m. and Canasta Cards at 10:00 a.m. February 6, 13, 20 and 27th. Thursday morning social at 8:00 a.m. and lunch at ll:30 a.m. Evening Bible Study at 7 :00 p.m.

Over The Hill Gang Looking Back on December 2024

During the month of December, the Over The Hill Gang (OTHG), prepared and served over 130 meals. Members enjoyed fellowship and various Christmas activities with our gang family. An average of 43 members attended the Thursday luncheons. In addition, the gang welcomed three visitors who joined us for our many festivities.

On December 5, 2024 the gang enjoyed grilled cheese burgers. The burgers were grilled on our newly acquired BBQ pit. Many thanks to Vern and his daughter for donating the BBQ pit and many thanks to the Austin’s for donating the burgers. In addition, our thanks goes out to Phil for grilling the burgers. Meals provided consisted of: Grilled cheese burgers, chips, sweet carrots, beans, tea and desert on December 5th. On December 12th. the group enjoyed Cordonblu over noodles, sweet carrots, salad, corn, dessert and tea/coffee. Our Christmas luncheon on December 19th consisted of: Turkey, Ham and many covered dishes provided by the gang members. Thank you to Gary and Jose for donating the Christmas turkeys.

Our annual gift exchange followed our Christmas luncheon. Each individual was allowed to steal a member’s gift up to two times. It was quite entertaining participating and watching the group exchange and fight over each other’s gifts. It was a very enjoyable event.

The OTHG General meeting was also conducted the same afternoon following the Christmas gift exchange. The meeting was called to order at 2:00 pm by Mike Rutherford. A total of 35 members attended. Mike stated that all goals and expectations were met during the last six months and continues to be a great place for our OTHG family and fellowship. Merle provided the reading of the last minutes and Mickie provided the financial report. Old Business: The elections of board members in June were as follows: Mike Rutherford, President – Charlie Azares, Vice President – Mickie Galarza, Treasurer – Merle Rouillard, Secretary – Joy Evans, Director – Janet Ross, Director. It was also stated that the building contract with the City of Liberty Hill was renewed. New Business: Mike reported the activities available to the members continues to move in a positive and supportive direction. The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 pm.

Many thanks to Gary Spivey for providing the December Liberty Hill history presentation and Jujlie Rutherfurd with Aspen Hospice Care for her presentation. In addition, many thanks to the Yak & Yarn ladies, as well as the Wednesday Bible study ladies for the outstanding Christmas decorating they provided.

Looking Back on November 2024

During the month of November, the Over The Hill Gang (OTHG), prepared and served over 122 meals and enjoyed many social events. An average of 37 gang members attended the Thursday luncheons during the month. In addition, the gang welcomed five visitors which included several members with the Liberty Hill City Council and administrative staff.

Meals provided were as follows: November 7th. – Chicken and rice casserole, mixed vegetables, garden salad, chips, fruit and dessert. November 14th., Chicken enchilada, beans, sweet carrots, garden salad, fruit, chips and dessert. November 21st. – Our Thanksgiving lunch of turkey and ham with OTHG members bringing a covered dish. Many thanks to RJ BBQ Catering Service for donating the turkeys and also many thanks to Mickie’s daughter for her generous donation.

The November history presentation was provided by Gary Spivey regarding the history and development of Liberty Hill. Gary’s presentation was followed with a Thanksgiving group activity. Each member was ask to write down on a piece of paper one thing they were thankful for. No names were required. Each piece of paper was then placed on a bulletin board for all to review and enjoy. It was very fulfilling and entertaining to read the various comments. Everyone appeared to enjoy the activity.

Looking Back On October 2024

During the month of October, the Over The Hill Gang (OTHG), provided over 188 meals and enjoyed fun and fellowship with our gang members. We welcomed seven visitors with four individuals joining the group. Average attendance of 38 gang members per week. October meals provided were as follows: October 3rd. = Brisket Bits/Noodles, Steamed Vegetables, Fruit, Garden Salad, Dessert and Tea. October 10th. – Baked Potatoes with Brisket Bits, Beans, Sweet Carrots, Garden Salad, Fruit, Dessert and Tea. October 17th. – Frito Pie, Steamed Vegetables, Garden Salad, Fruit, Dessert and Tea. October 24th. – Cordon Blue, Sweet Carrots, Garden Salad, Fruit, Dessert and Tea. October 31st. – Chili Dogs, Three Bean Salad, Sweet Carrots, Fruit, Dessert and Tea.

The October history presentation was provided by historian, Gary Spivy regarding the Liberty Hill School Desegregation. October ended with the Thursday lunch and Halloween costume contest. Rachel Austin was the costume winner by wearing a miner, or loggers costume. There were many outstanding costumes to choose from.

October activities were as follows:

The OTHG Thanksgiving luncheon will be on November 21st. with Turkey and a assortment of many covered dishes. We anticipate a lot of food and a number of guest in attendance. No social event planned on Thanksgiving Day – November 28th.
