2022 July 14

The Liberty Hill Digest July issue has a nice article about the Over The Hill Gang.

Text of article is at bottom of this post.*

We also had a reporter from the Independent newspaper interviewing us Over The Hillers about the club. And as a surprise treat, she played some music on the piano for us.

That piano is the most under-used piece of equipment we own. Any of y’all “pie-ana“players that would like to play something that we might sing along to.?

NEXT WEEK’S LUNCH

There were twenty-four in attendance today. And nobody went hungry.  My favorite was the red beans and rice. What was your’s? Do you have suggestions for future meals? Leave a comment

After lunch games were played. Five Crowns has become a club favorite. Dominoes and Canasta were also enjoyed. If you have a game you really enjoy, bring it and invite people to join you.

Tom’s Announcements
In four more days OTHG will be officially 24 years old. So, next Thursday, we will have a Birthday Celebration. At that time we will also recognize all y’all who have July birthdays

Q.  Who is using the Over The Hill Gang’s website? www.OverTheHillGangLHTX.com   This is YOUR website. What can we do to make it better? What would you like to see on the site?

Again I’m asking you to Please add your email behind your name on the sign in sheet. Please print both your name and email. So that our secretary doesn’t have to guess what you’ve scrawled. 😁

New name tags. Did you take your’s home with you? Did you bring it back? If you left your tag, did you find it this morning? How convenient is it? Can we make it better? Suggestions?

I’d love to have this building in use by us Over The Hillers all the time. Just let one of the board members know in advance so that we can make arrangements to unlock the building. Be aware that the Our Village folks are in the front room on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Fridays from 8 to 2. You can use the building during that time, just be aware that others R in the building also – please be a good and respectful neighbor to them.

Joke:  A priest, a rabbi, and a blond walk into a bar. The blond took a long look around with a puzzled look on her face. Then said, “Um, I think I’m in the wrong … joke.”

Let’s pray.

Participation in group activities and community organizations is believed to be associated with better health status in our senior population. But don’t let the name of this group fool you-this is a lively bunch.  The members of the Over The Hill Gang are never too old for good fellowship, fun times, and even better food.

The gang was founded in 1998 by Carl and Lorraine Williams after Liberty Hillian Chigger Gardner was looking for a good bowl of beans and some cornbread. Lorraine Williams told Chigger, “Next Thursday I’ll have you a pot of beans and some cornbread,” and that’s how this family-reunion-style Thursday lunch began. The thriving group quickly grew, and at one time had 150 members.

In 2020, the group took a hiatus due to pandemic concerns. Last month, they had their official re-opening with 28 attendees and 6 new members. “It’s about the care and feeding of people ages 50 or better,” group president Tom Williams (opposite page) says, “It’s about giving them something to do. We eat, we visit, and we play games like canasta or dominos, With aging often comes isolation, especially for single folks. This group gives them an outlet to come and socialize, We share a meal and break bread together.”

BE A PART OF IT

This fun group is looking to grow. Tom and friends offer a standing invitation to everyone 50 years or older who enjoys good fellowship, laughing until their cheeks hurt, fun games, and good comfort food all in the style of a family reunion, to join the gang.

Tom shared his thoughts on reaching this age of “maturity” at the June 9 meetup, “When we reach this age we finally understand that being over the hill beats being under the hill. Our idea of a hot time is holding a heating pad on our bad back. We and our teeth have decided that a separation is the best idea for our relationship, Getting high means that it’s time to take your blood pressure medication. Finally, we can now trust our friends more because we can’t even remember each other’s names let alone what we did in the past.” And before he put the mic down he reminded the group that their photo might appear in the Liberty Hill Digest, “So, if any of you have any outstanding warrants, let us know so we can blur your face.”

Humor definitely ripens with age.

We had twenty for lunch today

OVER THE HILL GANG www.OverTheHillGangLHTX.Com  Something amazing is happening at OTHG. We had closed our doors because we feared for the lives of our members. The pandemic ebbed and flowed. We would, with hope in our hearts, sputter and spark trying to bring the membership back to it’s glory days. But the movement just couldn’t seem to catch fire. Many of us have grown timid, hesitant, and fearful. Then the amazing thing happened! We tried something new. We began using social media to invite people. And they came. Nearly half of the people who were there today weren’t members a month ago. It just goes to show that the roots of this twenty-four year old organization are still strong enough to bring new life to this self-funded senior center. We can still fulfill our mission to bring socialization, recreational, and educational opportunities to those folks 50+.

We had a great chicken dinner with potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, dirty rice, beans, cottage cheese, and fruit, plus an assortment of sweet treats.

Many of us learned a new card game, Five Crowns. I believe we had two tables of six players laughing and groaning as they played. We had great coaches teaching us the rules and strategies. And occasionally helping us to rearrange our cards into a better hand.

These were today’s Announcements

This is not a holdup but everybody put both hands in the air.
(Counting fingers)
Well it looks like y’all had a safe 4th of July.

Board members please come up and introduce yourselves. Tell us a little bit about yourselves. Where you are from originally and how long you’ve been a member of OTHG.

Who can tell me the web address for the Over The Hill Gang’s website? www.OverTheHillGangLHTX.com
Q. Why should visit it?
A. That’s where the most up to date information can be found. And if you scroll down to the first post you’ll find our history.

How many of you were not at the First FRIDAY POTLUCK AND GAME NIGHT?
We missed you!
We ate ’til we were stuffed clear to the gills. Then we played games that had us grinnin’ like a possum eatin’ sweet taters. Mark your calendars for August 5th 7-9. For the next FIRST FRIDAY POTLUCK AND GAME NIGHT.

Remember to sign in. That gets you registered for the door prize and helps us with record keeping.

Please. Add your email behind your name on the sign in sheet. Please print both your name and email. So that our secretary doesn’t have to guess what you’ve scrawled. 😁 Your emails will not be shared with the group. It will only be used to notify you of any last minute changes or in emergencies.

We now have new name tags that aren’t disposable. Don’t take them home. Leave them here. We’re gonna fix up someplace to organize ’em so when you come back you can easily find yours..

This is YOUR club and this building is available for your use every day of the week. I’d love to have this building in use by us Over The Hillers all the time. Just let one of the board members know in advance so that we can make arrangements to unlock the building.

Joke:  Arne and Peder decide to go ice fishing. They head out, find a nice spot, cut a hole in the ice, and stick in their poles.

Suddenly, a loud voice booms from above, “THERE ARE NO FISH HERE!!!” Arne and Peder look around, look
at each other, and look up but don’t see anyone.
“I suppose we’d better move then,” says Peder. They get up and find another spot on the ice, cut a hole, and stick in their poles with great hopes of fresh Walleye. Once again, the voice booms from above, “THERE ARE NO FISH HERE!!!”

They look around, look at each other, then look up. Again, they don’t soo anyone “We best find another spot,” says Arne. So, they gather up their equipment, choose another promising spot on the ice, cut a hole, and stick in their poles.

Once again, the loud voice booms from above, “THERE ARE NO FISH HERE!!!”

They look around, look at each other, then look up, again seeing no one. Peder calls out, “God in Heaven, is that you?”

The voice responds, “NO! THIS IS THE SKATING RINK MANAGER! THERE ARE NO FISH HERE!!!”

2 new members. Say hello to Gwen and Philip.

We ate our fill, took some home, and donated the rest to the good folks at Our Village.

Sunday before the 4th

We hope y’all had a beautiful Sunday.

I don’t think I’d mentioned it earlier
but those nice red, white, and blue
decorations were courtesy of the folks at
Our Village, who share the
building with us.

Ella and Tom stopped by our building Sunday to double check our clean up after the FIRST FRIDAY POTLUCK AND GAME NIGHT. We got the trash out that we didn’t take out Friday. It was darker than the inside of a well by the time we were done playing games and this old man doesn’t much care for stumbling around in the dark to take out the trash.

Stay safe with the fireworks. I’ll be counting fingers on Thursday

Independence Day Celebration

We’re a couple days early but if we waited until next Thursday, we’d be a couple days late. Besides it’s never too early for a picnic lunch. Right Yogi?

Hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans, chips and dips, Jell-O. Everything but the ants … and possibly pic-i-nic basket stealing bears.

Good Food … Great Fellowship

I didn’t have to blur any faces. Nobody has an outstanding warrants. Yes I’m kidding 😀

This is your board left to right back row: Tom Williams, Janet Ross, Jannett Thornburg, Monica Moser. Front row: Ella Williams Merle Rouillard.

Card Games: 5 Crowns and Canasta

Today’s announcements
OTHG 06/30/2022
Happy Independence Day, y’all.
Happy summer too.
Please wear a name tag. Some are like me who recognize the face but can’t remember the name. And after awhile it too embarrassing to ask.
Last week it was suggested that we get reusable name tags. It’s a great idea that we will begin soon.

Also, a reminder, please add your email address to the sign-in sheet. We won’t publicize them. They will be used for important or urgent messages.

Remember: Tomorrow is the first Friday of July.
It is the very first of the FIRST FRIDAY POTLUCK AND GAME NIGHTs
7- 9. Bring games and food for a good time.
Get the word out to people you know who can’t come on Thursdays during the day.
Anybody who is at least 50 and live in the greater Liberty Hill area … basically, if they live in Williamson county … we will consider them in our charter to provide opportunities for social, recreational, and educational for the area seniors.

Joke: An elderly man was having hearing problems and went to see a specialist. The doctor fitted him with some hearing aids that brought his hearing back to full strength.
After a few weeks the man came back to make sure the new equipment was working properly, which it was.
The hearing specialist said, “It all seems perfect. Your family should be delighted you can hear everything now.”
“Oh no,” the man responded. “I haven’t told any of them. I just sit quietly, listening carefully.
I’ve changed my will four times.”
